Black Sesame and Almond Milky Iced Tea

May 19

A couple of weeks ago we went to our local Asian specialty grocery store. I needed some dried mushrooms for a hot and sour soup (that ended up being one of the most disgusting things I have ever made… I was so disappointed, I don’t know what went wrong!). It was late in the day on a Sunday and I was feeling like a treat. I wandered over to the bubble tea counter and the black sesame and almond milky iced bubble tea really caught my eye. Then the dozens of giant syrup bottles behind the counter caught my eye too and I decided that I would pass on the bubble tea. I am sure I sound like a snob, but nothing beats bubble tea that actually uses fresh fruit and homemade flavourings. Either way, the flavour combination of black sesame and almond stuck in my mind and I knew that I would make my own at home when I had the chance.

Hot, Spiced Turmeric Milk

A few weeks ago, while I was walking home from the gym, I stopped at our local super healthy, trendy juice and smoothie bar. I was hungry and I knew we didn’t have any food at home, so I sucked it up, went in and paid for an overpriced smoothie. I’ll admit, it was delicious and their selection included things that I am not used to seeing at the chain stores. I stood there for a very long time reading their menu before I chose a chocolate mint number but a couple of their other drinks stayed in my head. I wanted to recreate the chocolate mint one here but I realized that I have too many similar smoothies already (clearly I am a fan of making anything that tastes like chocolate feel more healthy!). Besides, earlier in the week I made a delicious smoothie, which was also inspired by their menu, filled with spices, mango and turmeric. But, the morning that I woke up to photograph this post, I was too cold to have a smoothie. There has been a chill in the air here and my body wanted something warm. I wanted to cradle a hot mug of goodness and wrap myself in a cozy blanket. And so, my turmeric smoothie became this hot, spiced turmeric milk, and I’m so happy that it did.

Yellow Tropical Smoothie

I’m currently convinced that smoothies are the perfect snack. They are refuelling, refreshing, filling, take no time to make and can be suited to whatever flavours you feel like in the moment. This is the final (for now) instalment of my video collaboration with my sister. She makes awesome youtube videos about all things beauty and was looking to post a workout routine video to go with a recipe. (If you are interested in seeing her workout routine, you can check out her video here!) In our discussions of our favourite post-workout snacks, smoothies were at the top of our lists: you get hydrated and full at the same time. Now that it’s warm outside, it’s also great for breakfast. I’ve been craving zesty, cooling smoothies instead of my go-to oatmeal these days.

Citrus Green Tea Cocktail

Last summer, when we went to London, we went to a bar called Bourne & Hollingsworth. It’s one of those places that I had very fond memories of and wanted to bring my boyfriend to see. It’s a tiny place down a set of stairs. It’s extremely easy to miss. The small space is decorated like a grannies house and a lot of their drinks are served in teacups. If you manage to get a table, sitting listening, to the random music from the 90s is a treat. The best part about being there though it watching the bartenders make the drinks. They don’t put on a show of it, but they are meticulous in what they do. Each ingredient is carefully added, muddled or squeezed and the results are original and amazing. Given the price tag of the beverages, we only tried one drink each, but there were so many on the menu that looked amazing, and I’ve remembered a couple of them ever since.
