When I think of certain foods, I marvel at human ingenuity to be able to transform the raw products into some of our most beloved foods. Chocolate is a great example. How did people look at a pod on a tree and decide to ferment, dry, roast, and liquify it into chocolate? How did people think that fermenting cabbage in a clay pot and burying it underground for months would be delicious? But alas, Kimchi proves us wrong. On the other hand, ice cream and it’s whole family, which includes frozen yogurt and sorbet, I understand. As I sit in my apartment, baking in the stifling heat, I understand why we figured out a way to freeze dairy, churning it until it is silky smooth and flavouring it with a countless number of delicious, fresh, vibrant flavors to enjoy during these hot summer months. I have been waiting for this type of weather for a long time now to try out this raspberry cardamom frozen yogurt.
Last week, it was absolutely freezing here in Calgary. I have to be careful what I wish for, because last month when it was 30C outside and our apartment was sweltering, I caught myself looking forward for when things would finally cool down and I could be in our apartment without dying of heat. Now that it’s been 10C (in August!) I am swaddled in blankets and wishing that the sun would come back. All of this to say, one of the things I normally avoid in a summer recipe is having to turn on the oven. I’m sure like most people, when you are hot, the last thing you want to do is add to that heat by turning up the oven or standing in front of the stove.
The first time I had fresh juice that really blew my mind was when we were travelling through Asia. In Malaysia and Vietnam, we had the most delicious and cheap fruit juices that were so bright and flavorful, every time we had one it felt like a real treat. Ever since then, I thought it would be wonderous to be able to make my own juice at home. In the end though, I thought that a juicer was kind of extravagant, both in terms of spending the money and giving up the counter space.
But, a couple of months ago my boyfriend bought me one for my birthday and I can’t get enough.
