After making my last post here (earl grey tea ice cream!) I had a few egg whites hanging out in my fridge. Immediately, I thought of making an egg white omelette. Normally I scramble my egg whites but I can now confidently report that this is infinitely tastier. Unfortunately, it’s taken me so long to come around to egg white omelettes because I always thought of them as something that people on diets ate (which somehow made them way less appealing to me). I can assure you this isn’t the case, especially when you have extra egg whites because you just made some delicious ice cream, you load it up with cheese and serve it with parmesan and sage buttermilk biscuits.
When I open the weather app on my phone, the description under the temperature reads “Frigid”. While I am grateful that the weather only turned cold mid-November this year, I find the word fairly depressing. It is such a harsh word, frigid, it makes me not want to leave the house just looking at it. So, when I got home from out of town and my boyfriend announced that we had three yellow onions that needed to be used up and suggested some onion soup, I was all over it.
I’m always on the lookout for fresh carbs that come together quickly. You obviously can’t bake a loaf of bread on a whim, so I was on the lookout for some good tea or soup-dunking fare (sweet or savoury is always a dilemma, am I right?). While I’ve never had them before, biscuits seemed like a pretty good idea. They are very appealing with their crunchy looking golden brown exterior and soft-pillowy insides. I could only imagine the number of varieties of biscuits one could make once you have a solid base recipe in your repertoire, so I was off on a mission to find one.
One of the best veggie burgers I have ever had is hands down from the Veggie Table stand, which is omnipresent at various markets (including Borough and Broadway markets, two of my favourites!) around London. It is the only place that I had ever had a haloumi burger. After having gone back to London this past summer and experiencing the glory of this burger again, I knew I would have to try and re-create it at home. I also knew that I would have to re-create one of their toppings that you get to choose from at the stall: the sweet and sour red onion jam which in tangy and packed with flavour, not to mention, perfect on top of the burger.
